Why shouldn’t I keep my products in the bathroom?

Think about all that goes on in your
bathroom...on second thought,
trust us on this.

Bathroom sink
Say you forget to close the lid on your new moisturizer or beloved face wash, which is sitting on your bathroom counter...

→ The naturally damp environment can promote bacteria growth inside of the product.

→ Warm, steamy conditions (who doesn’t love a hot shower?) can break down or oxidize certain ingredients, making them less effective.

→ Bathroom bacteria (we’ll just leave it at that) can sneak inside of an open bottle, then make its way onto your face.

The best option?

You can totally store products in the bathroom, but if you do, don’t leave them open and exposed. Instead, keep them in a drawer or medicine cabinet, far away from direct sunlight and fluctuating temperatures, so they’ll work their best.

Do I need to put my products in the fridge?

No, and you don’t need to buy a special skincare fridge, either (unless you want to!). But, some stuff does last longer when chilled, including light and heat sensitive ingredients like vitamin C and retinoids.

Plus, some products just feel good on ice — and also de-puff and soothe that much better (see: sheet masks, face mists, jade rollers and under eye patches). Cosmetic mini-fridges are super cute, but not necessary. Your kitchen fridge works just fine, as long as everything is sealed properly.

Store fridge

Is there anything I should NOT put in the fridge?

Oil-based products like serums can start to separate or become cloudy when they’re stored in the fridge, so it’s best to keep them away from extreme heat or cold. It’s also a smart move to never leave your clay masks in the fridge.

So, where is the best place to store all my skincare?

Icon Storage

A cool, dry place away from direct sunlight

We recommend a cabinet or drawer that’s far away from your steamy shower, or a lidded storage box in the bathroom or your bedroom. Bottom line: Keep things cool and dry.

Icon Powder

Powder-based products

Make sure to put these somewhere extra-dry, since high humidity can change the texture and even cause mold.

Icon Aerosol Spray

Aerosols and sprays

Never, ever store aerosol products near heat because the pressure could make them crack or explode — so that means not on top of bathroom radiators or anywhere near hair irons. Try a dark, dry and cool spot, like a vanity drawer or bathroom closet, instead.
